Our story, our mission, and the people who make it possible — rooted in Barrow, built for the future.
Barrow Frost Test Charter Academy was founded with a singular conviction: that students growing up in Arctic Alaska deserve an education as extraordinary as the landscape they call home. Founded by Principal Robert Test and recognized with the 2023 Alaska Charter School Excellence Award, our school was built to close the gap between the unique needs of Barrow's youth and the opportunities available to them.
We are a tuition-free, publicly funded K-12 charter school serving approximately 320 students across three buildings in Barrow, Alaska. Our educational model is unlike any other in the state — a purposeful fusion of project-based STEM learning, Iñupiat cultural knowledge, environmental stewardship, and classical liberal arts. We don't just prepare students for college. We prepare them to lead their communities, protect their environment, and carry their culture forward with pride.
From our 100% graduation rate to our 92% college enrollment rate and a 95% student attendance rate, our results speak for themselves. But numbers only tell part of the story. The real measure of our success is in the confidence of a first-generation college student, the curiosity of a kindergartner learning both coding and Iñupiat drumming, and the resilience of a community that believes its children deserve the very best.
These pillars are not aspirational slogans — they are the structural commitments embedded in our charter, our curriculum, and the daily culture of our school.
We hold every student to the highest academic standards through AP courses, dual enrollment, project-based learning, and data-driven instruction — preparing them for competitive universities and demanding careers.
Iñupiat traditions, language, and ways of knowing are not supplemental — they are central. We integrate indigenous knowledge systems authentically across all subject areas, honoring identity as a foundation for learning.
Our students are active participants in the health of their community and environment. Through service learning, environmental science, and industry certifications, they develop a lifelong commitment to sustainable solutions.
From Student Government to the Leadership Academy, we cultivate confident, self-directed learners who advocate for themselves and others — developing the voice and vision to lead in any room they enter.
Every instructional decision at Barrow Frost Test Charter Academy is intentional, evidence-based, and uniquely suited to the students and community we serve.
Students learn by doing — solving real problems in their community, conducting environmental research in the Arctic field, and building technology solutions with practical applications. Learning is never abstract when it happens in the world you live in.
We meet every student where they are through small group instruction, reading interventions, tutoring, social-emotional learning, and restorative practices. Monthly data reviews ensure no student falls through the cracks. IEPs and 504 accommodations are fully supported.
Parents are partners, not bystanders. Through our parent portal, weekly newsletters, quarterly conferences, monthly community meetings, bilingual materials, and emergency text alerts, families are always informed and always welcome.
Every student has the technology they need to thrive — MacBook Pros for grades 6-12, iPads for elementary, full Google Workspace access, and robust internet infrastructure designed for remote Arctic communities. Digital fluency is a graduation expectation.
